And now, Electrical Engineering 101 with Cyberstein
Cyberstein: think of it like this
Cyberstein: when you have GND->TIP then a stereo jack shorts GND&RING when a mono plug is inserted
Cyberstein: so that shorting out tells the device that the mic is inserted
Cyberstein: when you place a stereo jack into that port it doesnt short
NetAdmin: lol
Cyberstein: and it thinks that ???? is happeneing
Cyberstein: and turns off your headphone port
NetAdmin: I love when you try to "dumb down" your replies/analogies.. they are always just as confusing to most peeps ;)

RTFM
Theeyes (Theeyes@Snoonet-vkf.71k.jth6a2.IP) has joined
<Theeyes> I'm ready to turn on my comp with all the new parts but I don't know how to make sure the USB ports etc are good to go
<Kumorigoe> Theeyes, you'll install the motherboard drivers after you install the OS.
<Theeyes> @Kumorigoe how do I know that the USB slots etc are connected?
<Theeyes> I don't see any cable or anything I have to connect that like tol
<Kumorigoe> Theeyes, they're part of the motherboard, yes?
<Theeyes> No
<Theeyes> That part is separate from the mobo
<Kumorigoe> Front panel on the case?
<Theeyes> Like that slot that has like the audio jack USB etc isn't connected to the mobo in any way afaik
<Kumorigoe> Okay. Let's start from the beginning.
<Theeyes> No the back panel
<Kumorigoe> What mobo and what case?
<Theeyes> Not sure what the case is, I got it forever ago
<Kumorigoe> Theeyes, and what USB ports do you have that aren't part of the motherboard?
<Theeyes> Hmm I don't think I explained my predicament correctly
<Theeyes> The USB ports audio jack etc came on a panel that is not connected to the mobo
<Theeyes> Like I opened the box up and there was that panel and the mobo
<Theeyes> I'm not sure if the mobo is connected to that panel with the USB audio jack hdmi etc, how can I tell
<Kumorigoe> Is there a cord coming off the back of the panel?
<Theeyes> Nope
<Kumorigoe> According to the specs, there isn't a separate panel for that board. Please take a pic of what you're referring to and upload it to imgur, then link it here.

<Kumorigoe> ...
<Kumorigoe> Theeyes, tell me something.
<Kumorigoe> How exactly is that not attached to the motherboard?
<Theeyes> It didn't come attached
<Kumorigoe> Bullshit.
<Theeyes> It didn't.
<Theeyes> I don't know what else to tell you
<Kumorigoe> Then pull them off the board and take a pic of that.
<Kumorigoe> Because the only way they weren't attached is if either you broke them off, or you got a busted ass returned board.
<Theeyes> Wait a minute I see the issue
<Kumorigoe> Oh?
<%Alexendoo> Are you talking about the metal shield or the ports themselves?
<Theeyes> The actual like cover was not attached
<Kumorigoe> ...............
<Theeyes> The actual stuff they plug into is part of the mobo
<Kumorigoe> That's the I/O shield...
* Kumorigoe gets a refill on his whiskey.
<Kumorigoe> Jesus.
<Theeyes> Why do you volunteer help if stuff like this gets on your nerves?
<Theeyes> It seems like this wasn't really a stupid issue. :/
<Kumorigoe> ...tell me this. Did you bother checking the manual that came with your motherboard?
<Kumorigoe> Because it would have told you what that was.
<Theeyes> No I didn't
<Kumorigoe> What a surprise.
<Kumorigoe> That book isn't there to weigh the box down.
<Kumorigoe> It has useful information in it.;
